About The Author

Hi there. I’m D.R. Bohannon,. Most call me Debra or Deb.

My debut novel, Hearts Desire, relaunched on May 8, 2020. It was previously published under the title, A Heart’s Dream.

Fighting Secrets, Book 2 in the Unbreakable Series.

The remaining titles for this series are:

  • Praised By Magic
  • Facing The Darkness

Praised By Magic is written and is in the editing stages. I hope to have it done and ready for publishing by the end of this year.

Facing The Darkness is still being written and will soon be in the editing stages.

If you think I have a lot going on. Just wait…THERE’S MORE!!!

Beyond Judgement is a standalone that is unrelated to the Unbreakable Series. It is my favorite project to date. Click here to read the post about it.

I love being a writer, figuring out story lines for my characters, and playing with settings that are both realistic and fantastical. When I’m not writing, I keep busy in the writing community as an admin for an online fiction writers group.

I really enjoy discovering who my readers are and talking with you about reading and writing. So if you’d like to start a dialogue with me, you can ask a question here.

Here are some additional fun facts about me:

My Earliest Influences As A Reader

When I was a child, my grandma read books to me. My favorite book was The Ear Book, by Dr. Seuss. I don’t know how many The Ear Book, by Dr. Seuss times she read it to me but I remember loving the cadence of the words in that book. Sadly, Grandma Barb passed away when I was five years old. I still have the book and think about her whenever I read it to my 1 year old son.

My Earliest Influences As A Writer

My English teacher in Jr. High encouraged me to write. He was the first person that seemed interested in my abilities. We had a four page assignment, and mine ended up being about three times that length. He was surprised and pulled me aside to express his excitement in what I had written along with his encouragement. I still look back on that day as my starting point.

An Author I’d Like To Hang Out With

I’d love to meet John Green. He’s at the top of my favorite author list. His book, The Fault In Our Stars, touched my heart in a million different ways. I had a good friend who died from leukemia. when we were in grade school  I remember watching her struggle some days but she did it with grace. The book brings back a lot of memories from such a long time ago.

If I were granted my wish to hang out with him, I’d like to talk to John Green about his writing style and routine. I’m always interested in learning the different ways each writer writes.

Where and When I Write

Where I write depends on the kind of day I’m having. I have a room in my basement where I go to write on my computer, where I organize my pages, and finalize things. But often you’ll find me writing from the dining room table or living room couch where I can watch my sons play. I either listen to music or my favorite movies as background noise. I can’t write with total silence. Total silence bugs me. Maybe that’s just the mom in me though. Silence usually means something is up. I write pretty much anytime I have a free minute. Often times that is not until the boys are in bed.

Yeah. I know. My office is a mess…but I know where things are. Okay, I know where almost everything is.

I Share My Writing With…

I’m often asked if I share my writing as I go along. I do share my work with others. I usually try to complete four drafts before allowing others to read it. I need help finding holes with in the story. Character development flaws, grammar/punctuation, thoughts on the overall story. My eyes see what they want to see, and my brain skips over things when it comes to my own work. I can’t see everything because I know I’m too close to it.

Coffee!!

I drink coffee when I write. That’s the only thing that I seem to ever want. Coffee. Coffee. Coffee.

Where I Call Home

I grew up in a small Illinois town. No. It isn’t Chicago. Anytime I’m asked where I’m from, I say Illinois and people automatically jump to Chicago. It is FAR from there. I live in the woods with my husband, 1 year old son, my dog and a cat. Oh, and a goldfish. You can hear the crickets and see the stars at night. And deer graze in my front yard at dawn along the edge of a cornfield. There’s rarely a car that even goes down our road. Yeah, I’m that far out in the middle of nowhere. And it’s a peaceful place to write from.

I enjoy living in a small town. We are close knit and support one another other. However. Sometimes you don’t want everyone knowing your business, and well, it always gets out there no matter what.

Why I Started Writing

I started writing because I realized it helped me get my feelings out. I’m not a free speaker when it comes to how I’m feeling. I’m better at keeping things bottled up and that’s not good in the long run for anyone.

Books! I LOVE To Read!

Dr. Seuss books were my first love. As I grew, I turned to popular YA series books. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, Veronica Roth’s Divergent series. and Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games series. This list could go on  and on but I will stop here.

Movies! I LOVE Them Too!

I’m the girl who buys a ticket ahead of time to be in the audience at the premiere of all the movies adapted from the books I’ve read. You know. The people who get in on Thursday night before opening day on Friday? That’s me! Movies are close to my heart. I have a vast DVD collection. I watch whatever movies the cable channels broadcast. I like pretty much anything. And have been known to binge watch when a cable channel has a marathon. I can watch them over and over and over again. No problems there. It bothers my husband who is a once-and-done type of guy.

Favorite Actors/ Actresses

Emilia Clarke

Taylor Hickson

Again. This list could go on and on but I’ll stop here.

My #1 Support Early On

I looked up to one person most of my life and that’s my older cousin William. He was always there for me when I needed a friend. He cheered me up when I was down and encouraged me to be the best that I could be. One of the very first poems I wrote actually was about him. I framed it and gave it to him as a high school graduation present. I believe he still has it.

When I’m not writing, I’m:

Taking care of my sons and husband.

Watching a movie.

Drinking coffee.

Reading.

Listening to music.

Deciding what’s for supper.

Doing laundry.

Being a frazzled housewife.
